  • 07 Apr 06  Have your say

Realtors sell more than just housing. We sell an entire lifestyle - neighborhoods, schools and businesses, amenities and an overall quality of life. People educate themselves about the local housing market, the school district, business opportunities and recreational offerings. Some even investigate and participate in the local political scene.

How many of you are registered to vote? Of the registered voters, how many will actually cast a ballot - either by voting early, by absentee, or appearing at your polling location on Tuesday?

This election provides an opportunity to participate in a wonderful process. We'll be electing two city commissioners, who - along with their three peers - will decide issues large and small, affecting our marina, our commercial and residential districts, refuse pick-up, land development codes and more. Your input is critical. Otherwise decisions will be made despite our wishes, and our silence and non-involvement will be responsible for results.

If you think realtors have a vested interest in our community, you're right - we do. Many of us are involved in our association as well as myriad civic, fraternal and non-profit organizations providing us personal satisfaction and benefiting our residents. Involvement is key - and a major way to have an impact is to vote.

Regardless of your personal feelings about individual candidates or issues, you can employ one of our most basic desires: the right to have your say.

Remember to have your say on Tuesday.

Dee Chaplin, President, Amelia Island-Nassau County Association of Realtors
